Stepan was accepted to FAMU (Film Academy) in 1999, to the Photography Branch, where he has completed the Bachelor studies and now continues with the Master studies. He has been teaching photography at the College for Publicity Studies in Prague. For a long-time he has focused on documentary and reportage photography. He has done a chain of independent exhibitions: 'Southwards from the civilisation' in the regional Museum of Teplice, 'Looks into the Eyes - stories collected during the trip to Asia' displayed in Prague and Teplice. Some of his exhibitions were dedicated to black and white documentary photography from Subcarpatian Ruthenia mapping the history of the Czech borders. Stepan has been awarded a prize at the exhibition Czech Press Photo 2000, 2001, 2004. Through the project Photographers helping the flood victims he has displayed his work in many world's capital cities. In 2003 and 2004 he held a position of an official photographer of the President of the Czech Republic.
